This is a last of type movie.
The quality and worthiness is strong. This film received an Oscar for cinematography and was nominated for 6 more. It has several BAFTA's, Golden Globes and a Palme D'or. The cast is big names (De Niro, Irons, Neeson), the director is a big name (Joffre). Script is by playwright Robert Bolt (Oscars for Man for All Seasons, Dr Zhivago in the bag.)
TBH we're here for the Ennio Morricone soundtrack (which is seriously good too.)
But it was a horrible commercial flop and remains lacking in popularity 34 years on.
This movie has no car chases or cgi but it has conflict and motivation. It has military conflict. It is a tragedy in that the goodies actually lose big time. The character motivations are complex and foreign, olde worlde thinking. There is some respectful portrayal of the natives even if many of the actual speaking part characters (i.e. the white guys) are shown to have horrible disrespectful attitudes.
No one's going to do a movie like this these days.
ABM Rating 2.9/3
