Appalling and cynical, bleak and desperate, harsh AF with a horrible ending.

The Tory pollies do not love this and scream denial.... which makes it look like it's true... and they know and they don't care either. The comment by Iain Duncan Smith "I think it has really hurt Jobcentre staff who don’t see themselves as that." is particularly illustrative of the problem the film sets out to address. Rather than acknowledge that the 'Centrelink" approach is fundamentally flawed and requires major reform, it seeks to divide the electorate by raising a completely different issue (the welfare of Jobcentre staff under pressure).
The same casually dismissive/abusive Tories are very much infesting the country you live in too. Hello Tudge, Dutton, Joyce et al... Breach me, ya bastaads.

This is a brave text which is about the repudiation of neoliberalism.

Ken Loach does not muck about.

Simple language is used to to assert values that need to be asserted. The sort of values that make you appreciate what you actually have yourself rather than what you make a casual whinge about.

The style is achieved through Ken Loach's no script approach. The actor's are given the details of each shot and encouraged to make up their lines. The same thing Christopher Nolan copied for Dunkirk.

The characters seem so alive. The characters of the kids seem to grow arms and legs through the course of the film. That is amazing acting and direction at work.

From the film by Ken Loach - I Daniel Blake

‘I am not a client, a customer, nor a service user. I am not a shirker, a scrounger, a beggar nor a thief.
I am not a national insurance number, nor a blip on a screen. I paid my dues, never a penny short, and was proud to do so.
I don’t tug the forelock but look my neighbour in the eye. I don’t accept or seek charity.
My name is Daniel Blake, I am a man, not a dog. As such I demand my rights. I demand you treat me with respect.
I, Daniel Blake, am a citizen, nothing more, nothing less. Thank you.’

Instant classic, very special. ABM Rating 3/3
