  1. This is awful.

The performances are outdated. The script is not even tepid. It is lacking in humour.

There's little clever or satirical or witty. The famous line by Kenneth Williams as Julius Caesar "Infamy. infamy. They've all got it in-for-me" is a pun, people. And a stale one (It seems that way).

The supposed titillation of Amanda Barrie as Cleopatra getting out of the bath is about as sexy as your mum....

Connor and Dale as 'leads' are weak. Sid James as Mark Antony/romantic interest is very odd. He's ugly and far too old for this. Warren Mitchell as Spencius does the Marcus and Spencius gag like he's embarrassed to do it. (He should be.) Shelia Hancock appears barefoot as Hengist's nagging wife and almost steals the show.

The narration (voiced by EV Emmett, famous for newsreel commentaries from the 1930's onwards) is a sign of lazy plotting and poor direction at best but it also reveals the intention of the movie. It is designed to appeal to undereducated, old fashioned people who have not read a book since they were at school in about 1948. Lack of sophistication like that is not getting a pass these days.

I find Carry On depressing and dull. It should be much better. Sid James on Hancock is hilarious. Even 'Bless this House' had its moments. Kenneth Williams on Parkinson and Just a Minute was a scream. Kenneth Connor (M. Dicky Ticker off Allo Allo and part time Goon substitute) is hilarious.

This series of Brit comedy films should be titanic comedy classics. But they're like bad spelling.

    ABM Rating 0.1/3
