By the time of Busby Berkeley's death in 1976, the film had become revered as the archetypal backstage musical, the one that "gave life to the clichés that have kept parodists happy", as critic Pauline Kael wrote.

  1. This has the distinction of being a pre-code Hollywood movie (that's the "Hayes code" which led to censorship of sex and violence and weird stuff like married couples in separate beds and no feet off the floor in the bedroom scenes. (Shooting Indians is ok however.)
So this is 'racy' which means girls dancing in undies and showing off their legs for an 'audition' and real looking punch-ups.
These days it looks kinda twee.

The most memorable bits are the moving camera getting involved in the geometric, so called "Busby Berkely" dance sequences by through the "lineups of legs" shots. It's like an art movie in that sense. it has no narrative purpose other than gee-whiz that's amazing.
