Four Lions is a 2010 British satirical dark comedy film, directed by Chris Morris in his directorial debut, and written by Morris, Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong.

The film, a jihad satire following a group of homegrown terrorist jihadis from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, stars Riz Ahmed, Kayvan Novak, Nigel Lindsay, Arsher Ali, and Adeel Akhtar.

  1. Deeply satirical and bleakly funny. Also thoughtful and meaningful.
    Presents a believable account of actual, western Jihadis. Compare these guys to the likes of Man Haron Monis for instance. "Sleeper cells" are a neoliberal fantasy. This is more likely.
    Barry, Faisl, Omar and Waj are wrong and clownish in their attitudes but they are not alone.
    The cops/snipers/snoops are shown as competent but capable of major error. ("The wookie is down... is the wookie a bear?")
    The pious Muslim clerics are figures of ridicule and ultimately victims of authoritarian error.
    Tantalisingly there are hints of what motivates the jihadi terrorist (the oppression of Afghanistan, the humiliation of Islamic culture) and that not every brown person agrees with each other. (I'm thinking of the scene with the water pistols...)
    Good movie.
