Prick Up Your Ears is a 1987 British film, directed by Stephen Frears, about the playwright Joe Orton and his lover Kenneth Halliwell.

The screenplay was written by Alan Bennett, based on the biography by John Lahr.

The film stars Gary Oldman as Orton, Alfred Molina as Halliwell, Wallace Shawn as Lahr, and Vanessa Redgrave as Peggy Ramsay.

  1. Confronting. But the story of Joe Orton is confronting.
    Also respectful and honest.
    Gary and Alfred are good (you expect that now but this was made before they had big reps). Vanessa is too (it was her first movie in over 10 years).
    The ending is suitably sordid.
    The thing that strikes me most about it is how suburban life in the 60's is portrayed as mundane. This seems like I remember it (I was an infant but I do remember some things.)
